Commonly Asked Questions

  • We provide services as an out-of-network provider. That means you’re paying a “self-pay” price.

We receive payment via card and require a card to be on file.

Cost can range from $40-250 depending on the length and type of service. The most frequently requested service falls at $130.

  • We don’t.

Being in contract with an insurer impacts treatment and often means decisions will not be made by the therapist and client alone. Also, psychiatric diagnoses may affect future health/life insurance rates and/or approval.

We do not take or file insurance and are considered an "Out of Network Provider," also known as “Self Pay.” A monthly Superbill is provided in case you plan to pursue reimbursement for out-of-network services.

Using insurance (including filing out-of-network) requires a psychiatric diagnosis be sent to your insurance company.

  • I work well with those seeking holistic, long-lasting healing that integrates the body as much as the mind in the healing process.

I work well with individuals, small groups, and couples.

  • First, I’m so glad you’re considering trusting me with this journey. Now, let’s get down to the deets.

    1. Paperwork must be completed 24 hours before your first appointment.

    2. Once you arrive at 25 Goldsmith St. (mara-counseling.com/deets for parking/directions), I will meet you in the lobby (on the left after you enter the main sliding glass doors). If you’d like to use the private entrance, just let me know before we meet.

    3. While you wait, grab a cup of coffee, tea, or water from the bar area. I will come greet you in the lobby. You could also grab a snack and water once you’re in my private office.

    4. The restrooms are straight ahead on the right side after you enter the main Flywheel doors.

    5. There are two parking areas—one for accessible parking and dropping off and another main gravel lot. (See mara-counseling.com/deets for more info.)

    6. First sessions last 60 minutes and will generally consistent of confirming your identity using a form of ID, reviewing important aspects of the therapeutic experience, and beginning to elaborate on what is bringing you in.

  • You may not see a lot about me working with couples because I have two very niche and specific specialities in working with couples.

    1. I work best with couples seeking pre-marital counseling who are interested in utilizing the Prepare-Enrich assessment as the lens through which we focus. I'd encourage you to read more about prepare-enrich here.

    2. Another context in which I work well with couples is when a couple wants to integrate somatic-focused or sensate-focused techniques to enrich their relationship physically and emotionally. Not all healing comes through verbal processing. Oftentimes, our bodies' memories or past experiences bar us from experiencing profound safety and security in our partnership. You can read more about sensate-focused couples therapy here and more about yoga in couples' therapy here.

Superbills are provided to couples receiving both pre-marital and sensate-focused therapy.

  • While we provide an estimate of cost and length of services, the truth is: it varies. Some goals focus on short-term solution-based outcomes (6-8 sessions), while some strive to work through deep-rooted issues (15+ sessions). My therapeutic approach leans towards resolving core conflicts, which typically is considered a longer process.

Plans and recommended frequency and duration of therapy will be discussed and considered an ongoing conversation.

Mara Counseling also provides virtual services to those located in the state of South Carolina at the time of their appointment.

  • A licensed professional therapist or counselor (per the state of South Carolina) is an individual trained with a Master’s Degree or greater and is required to pass an exam to obtain licensure.

This is different from a psychologist who has a doctorate and typically performs a lot of testing. It’s also different from a psychiatrist, who is a medical doctor often prescribing medication.

  • Being a trauma-informed counselor means I am specially trained to consider factors that uniquely shape the treatment of individuals with extraordinary experiences.

Whether your concerns arose from extraordinary experiences or from the typical wear and tear of life, having a trauma-informed provider means they are attuned to a framework that offers long-lasting, deeply integrated healing.

  • I am a registered yoga teacher and a licensed professional counselor. I am not a yoga therapist. The designation of yoga therapist applies to individuals who received a specific degree at a higher level of education (masters/doctorate).

I am trained and certified through Subtle Yoga and am a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) at the 200 hour level through Yoga Alliance. The RYT credential means I have passed through a program approved of by the Yoga Alliance.

My training in Subtle Yoga not only taught the requirements for the RYT credential, but also provided me additional training related to trauma integration, chronic pain, supporting differently abled bodies, neurobiology, and more!

  • Anyone with a body!

The yoga I utilize weaves seamlessly into mental health services and includes many variations that can be done standing, in a chair, and even on the floor.

The yoga I utilize is not exercise-centric. And while yoga may benefit those working to resolve trauma (fight/flight/freeze responses) stuck in the body, bringing yoga into session is always about meeting your specific needs.

At times, I may recommend or direct you to another provider to better serve you. I have found my therapist or mental health counseling lens is not what everyone needs, and I always have your best interests in mind.

  • Of course! Not all clients need or want yoga services brought into therapy sessions. Mary Ashley enjoys and is trained in providing therapeutic services with and without yoga-based techniques.
